Topeka – The Kansas House of Representatives and Senate approved a compromise today on Senate Bill 83.
“SB 83 is key to giving Kansas businesses tax relief while making sure those who lose their jobs at no fault of their own are taken care of,” Speaker Neufeld said. “By getting this bill to the Governor tomorrow for her signature, businesses will benefit from the reduced rates this year.”
SB 83 reduces employment security taxes for Kansas businesses, eliminates the waiting week for laid-off workers in most instances, and pays the “waiting week” check to those still jobless after three weeks.
“This is common sense legislation,” said Majority Leader Ray Merrick (R-Stilwell). “The unemployment fund is stable, businesses see appropriate rates implemented and the jobless receive assistance when they most need it. I am proud of Republicans for pushing through the political process to establish better policy for the people and businesses of Kansas.”
Other tax relief being sought by the 2007 House Republican Legislative Agenda includes restructuring the state’s corporate income tax rates; three-year repeal of the franchise tax; exempting social security benefits from state income tax; and supporting a constitutional amendment to ease the property tax burden on Kansas citizens, especially those reaching the maximum social security retirement age.
